Research Abstract |
In this study, we interviewed 39 parents-35 mothers and 4 fathers-living in 4 different places in Japan-Niigata, Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Nagasaki-in 2006. The purpose of the research is to analyze parents' expectations for their chiklreng educational attainment or their child rearing behavior. In our interview, we set four main research topics. 1) children's everyday lives, 2) parents' expectations for their children, 3) parents' life histories, 4.) parents' opinions to education. The reason of those topics setting is our interest about the concept of reproduction of Pierre Bourdieu. We have a doubt that construction of an argument of reproduction is centered only academic career. Such overemphasis could lead to educational qualification. The purpose of child rearing is not only academic success. To probe it, we thought that we hear about parent's own life history and overlap their child rearing, so we could understand what are reproductive. In addition, when we analyze, we put emphasis on subjectivity of child oneself who doesn't always obey their parents. We try to focus on the negotiation of parents and children; about what thing child frustrate patent's hope, and about what thing parent doesn't give up against child's resistance, and so on. At the end of this project, we printed a report tided The Parent-Child Relationships and Educational Expectations in Modem. Japan.
