| Research Abstract |
In order to investigate the developmental processing for the comprehension of Japanese grammar, we have been developing the J. COSS test (JWU's, Japanese Test for Comprehension of Syntax and Semantics) since 1997. This test evaluated the Japanese grammatical ability with 20 items to indicate the developmental order and the acquisition age from child to elderly. Moreover we evaluated the grammatical ability for language deficits in high brain dysfunction, for example children with language delay, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) children, aphasic patients, and elderly, to investigate their developmental level and the specific difficulties of Japanese receptive grammar. (1) We investigated the influence of aging on the ability to evaluate the comprehension and generation of particles among the older elderly. cognitive ability and to improve the general grammatical ability. (2) The percentage of correct responses to the 20 grammatical items in J. COSS could reveal a developmental delay in children with language delay. (3) PDD children showed the specific grammatical difficulties in passive item. Since an analysis of the error patterns indicated how they misunderstood the passive sentences, we support the passive tasks for the matching to sample method clues with the visual stimuli. They exhibited an improvement in their understanding of passive sentences and showed the partial generalization in their daily life.
At these result, we indicate the grammatical development and the average acquisition age from child to elderly by using J. COSS test. Moreover, we indicate the specific grammatical deficit and effective supporting tasks for high brain dysfunction people. We have opened the J. COSS home page to explain the test and the research results, and distribute the free J. COSS test for one's wishes. Less
