Research Abstract

In the present study, we focused on the investigation of the flow-patter and pressure drop of the nonadecane-particles/water suspension flow flowing in the horizontal, vertical-up and vertical-down pipes. Nonadecane particles whose average diameter of 3.7mm and 1.1mm were separately suspended in cold water flow. The present study was summarized in the followings: 1. Flow pattern: In the horizontal flow, four flow patterns were observed, (a) flow with a stationary particle bed, (b) flow with a sliding particle layer, c heterogeneous suspension flow and (d) homogeneous suspension flow. The flow pattern shifted from (a) to (d) with increasing Reynolds number. In the vertical-up flow, homogeneous suspension flow was mainly observed. The tendency of particle aggregation was observed in the low Reynolds number flow suspended with small diameter particles. In the vertical down flow, homogeneous suspension flow was observed in the high Reynolds numbers and heterogeneous suspension flow in the low Reynolds numbers. In the present experimental conditions, no blockage was observed in all kinds of pipes. 2. Pressure drop: The pressure drop of the flow with a stationary particle bed of the horizontal flow was correlated by the relationship between the excess pressure drop coefficient and Froude number and that of the horizontal flow with a sliding particle layer was correlated by the relationship between the pressure loss coefficient and Reynolds number. In the low Reynolds numbers of the vertical-up flow, the pressure drop was correlated by the relationship between the excess pressure drop coefficient and Froude number and in the high Reynolds numbers, by the relationship between the pressure loss coefficient and Reynolds number. The pressure drop of the vertical-down flow was correlated by the relationship between the excess pressure drop coefficient and Froude number within the whole experimental region.
