Research Abstract |
In this project, we have found that remarkable improvement of photo energy conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) using SnO_2 nanoporous electrode could be achieved by the SnO_2 surface treatment with zinc acetate solutions. The effect of such interaction between dyes and zinc acetate was investigated as follows. 1) The effect of concentration of zinc acetate additive: In the cases of 3 dyes (Eosin Y, NKX-2677, N3) tested, short circuit current (Isc) of DSSC was increased when zinc acetate was added to dye solution. The increase of the dye adsorption amount was observed in all cases and this is the reason for increasing Isc. Increasing the concentration of zinc acetate in excess amount (>10^<-3> M), the decrease of Isc was observed. In this case, dye adsorption amount was decreased a little and thicker zinc acetate layer on SnO_2 surface could be a barrier for the injection of electron from excited dye. On the other hand, open circuit voltage (Voc) was increased with increasing the concentration of zinc acetate additive in the dye solution. 2) The effect of conditions of SnO_2 surface treatment with zinc acetate : The zinc acetate treatments on nanoporous SnO_2 electrode have been done under three different conditions. I) Treatment before dye adsorption (pre-treatment). II)Treatment in the same time as dye adsorption (normal condition). III) Treatment after dye adsorption (post-treatment). In the cases of pre-treatment and normal condition, both of Isc and Voc was increased remarkably. It is suggested that zinc acetate promotes dye adsorption effectively on nano-porous SnO_2 surface. In all three cases, Voc was increased. It is notable that Voc improvement was observed even in case of post-treatment in which dye adsorption amount was very low and resulted in low Isc. This Voc improvement effect could be explained by the suppression of charge recombination on SnO_2 suface by thin film coating of zinc acetate.
