Research Abstract

The strain Marinobacter sp.TY4, which was isolated from coastal sea sand, exerted degradation activity of nonylphenol oligoethoxylates. The activity is expressed by only the cells harvested at stationary growth phase, and only in the presence of particles which adsorb the nonylphenols Shortening of the ethoxylate chains was not observed, and the benzene ring seemed to be directly cleaved
The gene cluster, being engaged in the degradation of benzene compounds, were found in the cell and comprised of catBCA, benABCDKE. Mutants defected with catA or benA were developed a suicide vector. The defected mutants still exerted the degradation activity, while the catechol degradation activity was halved. Another degradation enzyme was suggested to be present.
