Research Abstract |
The purpose of the present study is to elucidate the difference in the effect on the human circadian rhythms between bight light and physical exercise as time cues, the mechanism of the effect of physical exercise and the relation between the effect and strength of exercise (2005) : 15 male subjects were divided into two groups; physical exercise and non-exercise, and stayed in an isolation facilities with illumination of low light intensity for 7 day without knowing the time of day. From the third to 6th of experimental day, the subjects in the exercise group performed physical exercise with a bicycle erometer for 2 hours per day. As a result, the plasma melatonin rhythm showed phase-delay shifts in both groups, and there was no difference in the parameter of melatonin rhythm between two groups. The timing of physical exercise in this experiment was regarded as scheduled in the dead zone of an expected phase response curve of circadian rhythm for physical exercise. (2006) : 7-8 male sub

jects participated in two experiments, physical exercise and non-exercise. Physical exercise with bicycle ergometer was performed in the subjective evening. As a result, the plasma melatonin rhythm showed phase-delay shifts in a non-exercise experiment, while the melatonin rhythm was not shifted in an exercise experiment. On the other hand, the routine life schedule of 7-8 male subjected was phase-advanced by 8 h in an isolation facility with dim illumination and fixed for 4 days. Meanwhile, the subjects performed physical exercise for 4 hours per day. After that, they were released into free-running conditions where the times of going to bed and get up were decided by the subjects. As a results, the plasma melatonin rhythm was not affected by the phase-advance shift of life schedule, but the sleep-wake rhythm was significantly phase-advanced by physical exercise. Together all, these findings indicate that physical exercise is a potential time cue for the human sleep-wake cycles but not for the circadian rhythms. Less
