Research Abstract |
The biggest problem in the field of regenerative medicine is the mechanism by which bone marrow derived cells transform to kinds of cells other than blood cells. In spite of many reports executed by using murine models, the truth is still confusing. As for human, there has been much less information because of technical limitation. We tried to examine whether cell fusion took place or not by analyzing biopsy specimens from the stomach of bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients. We found that we could use blood group antigen in gut epithelium as an identification marker for BMT recipients. After choosing appropriate patients, we stained both blood group antigen A as an identification marker for recipients and Y-chromosome as a marker for donors on the same sections. Then we successfully detected cell fusion between recipient derived epithelial cells and bone marrow derived cells from the donor.. This is the first report which demonstrates cell fusion between bone marrow derived cells and epithelial cells in human.
