Research Abstract

We immunohistologically examined the distribution of glucocorticoid receptors in olfactory epithelium over time. On postnatal day 1, no glucocorticoid receptor expression was seen, and olfactory epithelium was positive for GAP 43, a finding characteristic of immature neurons. Glucocorticoid receptors were seen in olfactory epithelial feeder cells and olfactory neurons from postnatal week 2 onward. These cells were negative for GAP43, indicating that glucocorticoid receptors were found in sustentacular cells and mature olfactory neurons.
In summary, with triamcinolone acetonide administration, an increase in the number of apoptotic cells was seen among cultured mouse olfactory epithelial cells. In epithelium taken from mice, an increase in the number of apoptotic cells was seen among sustentacular cells and spherical basal cells. Interestingly, spherical basal cells, which do not have receptors, do undergo apoptosis. We suggest the mechanism of apoptosis between sustentacular cells and spherical basal cells was different pathway. In spherical basal cells, apoptosis and proliferation of these cells subsequently occurs in response. Reproduction of olfactory epithelium might be associated with these phenomena.
