Research Abstract |
Several conditions are associated with dry mouth such as side effects of various drugs, systemic diseases such as the Sjogren's syndrome, malignancies affecting the salivary glands, and radiotherapy to the head and neck cancer. Moreover, the incidence of dry mouth sensation is considered to increase with nasal disorders, such as nasal allergy, sinusitis, and rhinitis. To analyze the relationship between the nasal obstruction and oral moisture, we developed the Mucus III which was the new electrical device designed for measuring resting moisture condition in the oral cavity should be safe and provide a fast and accurate measurement. Firstly, we evaluated the Mucus III for measuring the moisture of the oral mucosa in an animal model of salivary gland hypofunction, as a preclinical testing of the instrument. Secondly, we evaluated the Mucus III for measuring the moisture of the oral mucosa in patient s with Sjogren's syndrome with hyposalivation and healthy women as a control group without dry mouth. As the result of these evaluations, the Mucus III effectively assesses the degree of dry mouth objectively and noninvasively The oral moisture in patients with nasal obstruction due to sinusitis and nasal allergy were examined by using the Mucus III. There was no significant difference in the oral moisture due to MucusIII between the patients with nasal obstruction and health women.
