Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Frederick has been continuing research as planned for the Simons Observatory (SO) CMB experiment. Frederick has been in charge of the optical design development of the small aperture telescopes that Japan will develop and deploy by 2021. He has also been organizing the SO meetings for Japanese collaborators and taking initiative to make the Japanese research contribution greater in the international collaboration. He has developed and studied at least 5 different reflective and refractive optical designs as candidate designs for the small aperture telescope. In the end he developed a new compact, wide field, and high throughput 3 refractive lens optics telescope design unused in the CMB field. He is currently assessing the optical capabilities and systematics of the design through physical optics and method of moment simulations using the optics simulation software GRASP that was purchased last fiscal year. Frederick also attended two SO collaboration meetings for this development and one CMB Stage-4 conference in the USA. Frederick also presented two SO talks at the Physical Society of Japan and Astronomical Society of Japan conferences.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The development of the SO small aperture telescope has been proceeding as planned. Currently the SO project is in the optical and mechanical design stage and will move into the early fabrication stages starting this year. The Japanese side of the collaboration is also currently in process of obtaining more researchers and this progress is also going as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
With the optics design concept developed by Frederick, the SO small aperture telescope mechanical fabrication will start this fiscal year as planned. Frederick will continue to optimize the optics design according to mechanical fabrication needs. He will continue to assess the detailed systematics using optics simulations adding more detail as the mechanical design is developed. He will also work on designing the forebaffle and telescope platform shields needed to reduce systematics. Frederick will also be largely involved in various optical lab tests for the development of the lenses and cryogenic baffles using cryogenic dewars at the IPMU lab. Frederick is planned to attend multiple CMB meetings and conferences this year in the USA again for further development work.
