Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Aサイトに磁性Feイオン、Bサイトに非磁性Tiイオンを含んだ新規四重ペロブスカイト構造酸化物CaFe3Ti4O12を高圧法を用いて合成することに成功し、この物質が磁場下で興味深い磁気転移を示すことを見出した。この物質では、AサイトにあるFe2+スピン間での磁気相互作用の競合によりフラストレーションが生じ、その大きなモーメントにも関わらず、転移温度が非常に低い反強磁性が現れる。さらに、磁場中ではこのAサイトスピンが強磁性的な配列へと変化するという興味深い現象が見出された。
The material CaFe3Ti4O12 with unusual square-planar Fe2+ centers at the A sites was successfully synthesized using high-temperature high-pressure techniques, and the magnetic properties were characterized for the first time. Collection of neutron powder diffraction data under high magnetic fields at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK, allowed the observation of non-trivial magnetic ordering for CaFe3Ti4O12. These data along with additional magnetic-property characterization techniques such as heat capacity and Mossbauer spectroscopy were combined to reveal unprecedented insights into the unusual properties of these A'A3B4O12 materials.
