Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The role of neutrophil extracellular traps during malaria infection remains largely unknown and we have been addressing this during the last year of this project. Techniques to accurately measure NET release are lacking and therefore we first worked to develop a quantitative technique for NET measurement. We were successfully able to develop this technique which can be used to quantify NET release. We are applying this technique to characterize the extent and timing of NET formation during malaria infection.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have been addressing the research goals for this project. Several difficulties in the development of a method for NET measurement have been overcome, and we have successfully obtained data using a model system of NET induction. Importantly we have been able to apply our technique to measure NETs directly during malaria infection. This should allow the research to continue to progress smoothly and future research goals to be met.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We will be focusing future research on determining the mechanisms of NET release, and the role of NETs in malaria infection. We aim to disseminate these results to public by meaning of publication and/or meeting presentation.
