Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The 4 main activities were planned and carried out with the following results:
1) Design of experiments fully finished and the experiments began according to the plan. 2) Experiments: On the spot-recording of the spectra of udder tissues (using NIR portable sensor) is performed continuously. So far, we have acquired 40,000 udder tissue spectra of the cows in various physiological conditions (healthy, sick, pregnant, not pregnant, estrus, non-estrus). Concurrent standard milk analysis with the purpose of mastitis detection was also performed. 3) Literature review and data analysis of the existing laboratory data with the purpose of mastering the specifics of Aquaphotomics spectral data analysis was erformed as planned and resulted in 2 chapters, and collaboration on 3 papers. 4) Dissemination of research results: 2 chapters already submitted to the publishers and accepted, 1 scientific paper submitted and currently under review.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The preparation and experimental design went exactly as planned, the collaborator farm provided all the access and information needed on the status and conditions of the cows. The experiment was successfully designed and its execution began on time. The acquisition of spectra of udder tissue is ongoing, and is progressing smoothly. The preliminary exploratory analysis based on 40,000 collected spectra gave satisfying results in the terms of quality and suitability for further analysis with the purpose of mastitis detection. In parallel, review of aquaphotomics literature as well as training in data analysis based on already existing laboratory data was performed. The Biomeasurement Technology Laboratory provided extensive database of spectral data coming from different aqueous and biological systems, which provided deeper understanding of the water functionality in different conditions of the systems.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The future plans involve continuation of spectral acquisition of udder tissues and beginning of the collection of saliva samples. Preliminary analysis of the collected udder tissues spectra already began in the previous period, and it will be the focus of the research efforts in the next period. The plans will expand to include, beside detection of mastitis, detection of ovulation period and pregnancy. We expect the research results to be disseminated through high impact factor scientific journal papers as well as promotion on international conferences and symposia. The previous period resulted in writing 3 papers which are expected to be published in the next period. One poster presentation is in plan for the conference International Conference on Advancing Molecular Spectroscopy, which will be held on 30Jun-1July 2018 at Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan.
