Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The Yogascapes in Japan project in 2018 included facilitation of a successful international conference in November by Patrick PcCartney. Several scholars from overseas attended and presented. We are currently working on a special issue edited volume in the Religions of South Asia journal; which should also include some papers from the next Yogascapes conference in July 2019. Several peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed articles related to the research have been published in various journals and online spaces; while several more are currently in-press and set to be published in 2019.
More professional contacts have been established both within and beyond Japan. McCartney continues to gain a better understanding of the role of yoga in Japanese society, as well as furtively looking into other Asian countries, as well. He is also working towards securing two book contracts to turn his PhD dissertation into a monograph as well as another monograph that focuses on the current and future research related to global yoga in and beyond Japan. His another positive achievement is the recognition from peers through being invited to give keynote addresses at conferences in Canada and USA, and talk at a history of yoga workshop in UK.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The project is steadily ticking over. McCartney holds himself to a high standard and am quite impatient. He has published several articles and films so far and has many more in press to become available later this year. He is organising the second Yogascapes in Japan conference for July 2019. He has presented at a few conferences in Japan and overseas. There is a constant 2000+ unique views on the website and the project continues to gain traction. He has reduced the fieldwork to focus on writing.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

McCartney has a very interesting project that is a direct result of this current project. Information can be found here: https://www.yogascapesinjapan.com/the-next-project-yij2.html. He has several articles that he continues to work towards publishing. We also have the next Yogascapes conference in July 2019; https://www.yogascapesinjapan.com/conference-2019---cfp.html. The future work also consists of the writing more papers that focus specifically on yoga and wellness tourism in Japan, particularly in relation to 'temple yoga'. The future project seeks to look at the relationship between politics of yoga and sustainable development, as well as the Trans Asian Buddhist Circuit that links Kyoto with Varanasi, as well as faith-based development in tourism-reliant economies in the global south.
