Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
FY2019 was the final year of this collaborative project. The fellow Barbora Kubenova spent the first quarter of FY2019 in Yakushima finishing behavioral observations and data collection, with the support of a research assistant. The second quarter until the end of her fellowship in November 2019 consisted of presenting her work at European conferences, data management and analysis, and manuscript preparation, which continues today. Key results from this project suggest that whether a mother is nearby or not has an influence on its juvenile’s social behaviour, as does her own social status and degree of protectiveness of her offspring, i.e. her maternal style. These kinds of results should shed light on how social structure in primate groups is maintained across generations, with implications for the evolution of human sociality as well.I was able to visit Barbora in Czech Republic in December 2019 and we continued to discuss progress of the project and work toward manuscript publication.
