Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Governance Aspects of Higher Education for Sustainable Development (HEfSD); A major finding derived from this research shows that a more effective collaborative approach to think of and advance towards HEfSD, across global stakeholder networks, is essential. As sustainability issues exacerbate and become more interconnected, collaboration becomes more relevant but also more challenging. In addition, lack of a governing approach to HEfSD further exacerbates this issue. Social and Environmental Sustainability - Interlinkages in Higher Education for Sustainable Development(HEfSD); Stronger interlinkages between social and environmental matters are needed to fill existing social sustainability gaps in HEfSD. Closer attention should be paid to vulnerable community groups, particularly indigenous peoples when exploring socio-environmental interlinkages. Climate Education to Action; The transition from climate education to action is becoming an aspect that deserves major attention. Research shows that incentives need to be created to help students change their unsustainable lifestyles and behaviours. Gender Aspects of Capacity-building for Sustainable Development; Research indicates that the participation of women in capacity-building for sustainable development needs to be taken seriously. In doing so, stakeholders should contribute to foster women’s decision making to become active participants of capacity-building agendas aimed to face sustainability challenges, such unsustainable use of energy.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have undertaken field research in two case study locations, Australia and Japan. I have also documented and submitted preliminary research findings in the form of journal articles and policy briefs in high caliber journals such as Sustainability Science. I have also been able to disseminate research results at international conferences and workshops. In addition to the above-mentioned activities initially proposed in my research plan, I have also engaged in internal and external collaboration. A case in point is the First Global Thematic RCE Conference in Okayama where I had the opportunity to lead the Workshop ‘From Climate to Action’. Findings derived from the workshop helped me develop the Policy Brief, currently under external review, From Climate Education to Action.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Based on preliminary research findings I am planning to expand my research on gaps found in this investigation to date. Major research gaps, areas for further research and future outputs are as follows: - Governance Aspects of HEfSD; I am expanding my research on the interface between governance and education for sustainable development. - Social and Environmental Sustainability -Interlinkages in HEfSD; I am expanding my research on vulnerable community groups when exploring socio-environmental inter-linkages. - Gender Aspects of Capacity-building for Sustainable Development; Based on preliminary findings I am further developing the piece. Following the research plan proposed. Also I am submitting the journal article for publication.
