Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The primary purpose of the research is to identify and propose good practices, including gender-responsive approaches, to enhance education for sustainable production and consumption. The specific study subject is Education for Sustainable Consumption (ESC) and waste education. In FY2017, the fellow surveyed and compiled relevant scientific and grey literature on the following topics: Education for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Consumption and Production; Education for Sustainable Consumption; Waste education; Gender in education; and Waste and Gender. From the data collected, systematic reviews were completed on the topics of waste education and waste education and gender. An outcome of the systematic review is an accepted conference paper, due to be presented in May 2018. The other outcome is the outline of ESC and waste education programs as reported in scientific literature, with an abstract prepared and submitted for conference presentation also in FY2018. The fellow also participated and contributed to the UNU-IAS organized the first thematic conference on the Regional Centers of Expertise (RCEs) in December 2017, in Okayama, Japan. The fellow designed data visualization and maps on the stakeholder's networks and the ongoing topics in the centers, as well as, helped monitor and manage the sustainable consumption and production presentation sessions. Moreover, the fellow co-authored a policy brief under revision, on the gender equality in the field of education and sustainable consumption and production.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The five months that comprised the FY 2017 were productive in accomplishing the initial research objectives. However, because the work was mainly on literature compilation and analysis, a significant period was used to identify relevant databases, and subsequently, select the relevant articles to be analyzed. Additionally, there were some limitations in selecting workable search boundaries. The FY2017 served as a foundation period for the next phase of the research and prepare the production of quantifiable outcomes. For instance, the literature review was completed, allowing the design of a conceptual framework, a process that will be communicated in an academic paper, as well as, in a major international conference in the topic of waste management in the following fiscal year. However, much effort can be made to produce intermediary outputs to evaluate the research progress, as well as, get feedback from the academic community, through short-communication and conference participation. Also, the fellow had the opportunity to get acquainted, participate in discussions and contribute to the ongoing projects in UNU-IAS, related to her research topics, such as the Education for Sustainable Development project and the Governance for Sustainable Development project. Those interactions are significant to generate input to the JSPS research objectives, as it expands the possibilities to conduct case studies in the projects’ locations and generate inputs for both the UNU-IAS projects and the JSPS project. Here, more attention should also be given to produce policy-relevant results.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the FY2018, the fellow will apply the constructed conceptual framework, to assess existing waste education programs in several locations. Four programs were identified and will be approached: 1) Love Food Hate Waste completed in Australia and ongoing worldwide; 2) Upscale and Mainstream Green Office Lifestyles in Vietnam; 3) Upscaling Sound Food Waste Management Practices through Youth and Community Education in Schools and Institute of Higher Learning in Malaysia; 4) and Sustainable Consumption and Recycling Interventions for Paper and Textiles for Reducing Urban Climate Footprints in India and Bangladesh. In FY2018, the fellow plans to make several field trips and conduct several interviews with the project promoters, managers, and beneficiaries. The goal is to improve the conceptual framework in one hand, and on the other hand, evaluate the gender aspects of such projects and propose improvement pathways for gender inclusion in those projects, and on waste education programs in general. Two manuscripts (under preparation), A) a systematic analysis of the existing literature on ESC and B) proposing the conceptual framework, will be submitted to a scientific journal publication. Also, conference participation, combined with interviews with senior researchers and participants, will be conducted to showcase the framework and the intermediate results of the framework effectiveness. Adding to the previous, a ‘policy brief’ on the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in education for sustainable consumption and production initiative, will be prepared.
