Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Dr. Zardai sets out to finish revising and upgrading his book manuscript, and publish it as a book. He is currently in talks with a publisher, MIT Press, and has gone through the material two times. He is working now with the guidance of an editor. This is going according to schedule, and the manuscript can be sent off to the publisher within the next months.
One of the other goals of his JSPS fellowship was to publish materials from the book as papers. He has published a paper and a book review, and has two papers under review. He also finished another project, addressing the ethics of AI. The paper written with a Dutch researcher is now also under review. He wrote two other papers which He is preparing now for publication.
He has also applied materials from his book to a well-known problem in experimental philosophy and psychology. His book employs a distinction between voluntariness and intentionality. He puts to use this distinction to provide an original interpretation of the widely discussed Knobe-effect. Based on his interpretation of Knobe’s data it might be possible to set up an experiment in the future.
During his tenure He read up on topics that he can address during his future work. He has done research on the ethics of AI, and on topics in moral philosophy, focusing on blame and responsibility. He has also read a great amount of political philosophy and international relations theory; mainly on international justice, equality, and exploitation. This new knowledge will help him in writing his next book, and to improve his competencies as a teacher and supervisor.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Dr.Zardai will focus on completing the revised book manuscript, and on getting it ready for publication. He also plans to finish the manuscripts in progress, and to deliver talks in Akita, Hiroshima, Okayama, and Tokyo. He will continue his reading group for Keio PhD and MA students, and he established a new philosophy reading group with Dr Akiko Frisschut (Akita International University). He is also cooperating on a conference with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, titled Science, Ethics and Action (SEA), planned for February 2020.
April 2019 - July 2019: Finish work on book manuscript and send it off to editor at MIT Press; ; Finish work on the manuscript “What the Knobe-effect Tracks: Unintentional but Voluntary Harm” and send it off; Deliver talk at Keio University; Continue leading reading group for PhD and MA students at Keio University. Expected outcomes: Receive extended editorial feedback on book manuscript; Publication of paper on the Knobe-effect’s new interpretation.

July 2019 - September 2019: Address comments from book editor; Continue work on “AI, Decisions, and Responsibility” paper and submit it; Deliver talks in Akita, Hiroshima, and Okayama; Make progress with publishing the book. Expected outcomes: Publication of paper on why AI should not resemble humans in French-Japanese volume.
October 2019 - November 2019: Complete work on the book; Finish and send off rewritten “Doings and Things Done” paper to History of Analytic Philosophy. Expected outcomes: Complete work on the book; Publication of paper on the Doings -Things Done.
