Outline of Final Research Achievements

The foundation of human psychological functioning lies in our ability not only to share perceptions and mental states with others but also to differentiate them from our own (self-other representations). The purpose of this project was to shed light on the dynamic process of self-other representations, based on the hypothesis that interactions between our bodies and the environment, including others, play a vital role in their development. Based on cognitive models grounded in data obtained from adult humans, we formulated a hypothesis concerning the emergence and development of self-other representations. Subsequently, we assessed the validity of this hypothesis through both theoretical and experimental approaches. Lastly, drawing upon the framework of computational developmental neuroscience, we presented a comprehensive cognitive model that elucidates the emergence and development of self-other representations.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
