Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は、蛍光体を用いた放射線計測を行うという目的が同じでありながら、異なる分野として発展してきたシンチレータ、および蛍光体型ドシメータの実験的な統合モデルを描く事である。このような目的を達成する為、材料系としてはバルク単結晶、透明/不透明セラミックス、ガラスを選択し、何らかのホストに0.1~10%程度の発光中心元素を添加した物質を合成し、そのシンチレーションおよびドシメータ特性を評価した。
例えば本年度の成果として、無添加および Tl 添加 CsBr 透明セラミックスおよび単結晶の検討を行った。これらにおいては共に、シンチレーション特性とドシメータ特性の反相関性を確認できた。総じて様々な物質系において、透明セラミックスはドシメータ特性が高く、一方で単結晶はシンチレーション特性が高いという結果が得られた。これは透明セラミックスは多くの場合、還元雰囲気で合成を行うために陰イオン欠陥が形成されやすく、それらがドシメータで必須となる捕獲中心となる事で、ドシメータ特性を高め、一方でキャリアが発光中心まで輸送される確率が減少する為に、シンチレーション特性は相対的に低くなるものと理解される。
これらに加え、本年度からは研究協力者らのグループと協力し、シンチレーション、ドシメータ用の遅発蛍光と、光音響信号強度の相関関係を調べ始めた。光音響信号は主に熱として消費されるエネルギーに比例する事が知られており、発光に寄与しない分のエネルギーが熱に変換されているという事を、定性的に実験で検証した。

Reason

本研究を進めるうえでの作業仮説は、二次電子 (デルタ線、もしくは半導体分野におけるキャリア) の、発光中心と捕獲中心への分岐比がシンチレータもしくはドシメータとしての性能を規程するというものである。従来は希土類発光中心を有するセラミックスと単結晶にという、秩序構造を有する物質系においてのみこの仮説を検証してきたが、昨年度は短距離秩序構造を有しないアモルファス (ガラス) においても同様の傾向 (シンチレーションとドシメータ用蓄積蛍光) の反相関性を確認する事が出来た。本年度はさらにこの研究を進めると共に、光音響 (熱) エネルギーとの相関性に関しても知見を得ることが出来た。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

より多様な物質、すなわち様々なナノ・ミクロスケールの秩序・ランダム構造におけるシンチレーションおよびドシメータ特性を観測し、どういった場合が反相関性が成立し、どのような場合は成立しない (すなわち多くの吸収した放射線エネルギーが熱失活する) かを明らかにする。さらに研究協力者らとの共同研究を通じて、逐次過程におけるダイナミクスや、光音響を用いた熱失活の定性的な評価を行っていきたい。
