Outline of Final Research Achievements

The 'Real world based design' proposed in this research is an approach for creating new designs over real industrial products and buildings by virtually editing these 3D shapes. To realize this new design process, we developed Editable Reality system, a technology for freely editing the shape of arbitrary objects in the real world as seen through a video see-through display, in the same way as virtual objects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現実世界に存在する物体を,あたかも仮想物体のように自由に形状編集するための技術であるEditable Reality(ER)は,既存のXR技術の延長には無い新しい応用分野が期待される.実世界ベースデザインはその応用例の一つであり,既存の工業製品や建築物をベースとして,これらを改変した新しいデザイン案を,実物体のリアリティを維持したまま検討できるようになることの意義は大きい.
