Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the research period supported by the FY2019 fund, the research team conducted a detailed analysis of the quantitative data collected from Chinese and American prospective tourists to Japan in order to understand tourists’ information search behavior and their knowledge and perceptions of a range of natural hazards in Japan. The research team also conducted interviews with accommodation employees to further understand the sector’s preparedness for natural hazards. Building on the work done in previous years, the research team continued developing hazard information support systems for international tourists visiting Japan. The effectiveness of the systems was evaluated through experiments during the development phase, and relevant refinements were made. These systems were presented at both domestic and international conferences to disseminate the outcomes of the project and to seek feedback from experts in relevant fields (e.g., tourism and information systems). In addition to the abovementioned activities, a journal paper presenting the developed information support system was also prepared and submitted to an academic journal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The research activities supported by the FY2019 fund were carried out without any serious obstacles during the first half of FY2019. Although the quantitative data analysis took longer than initially expected, as described above, the research team continued developing the hazard information support systems for international tourists, and these systems were presented at both domestic and international academic conferences. However, the progress of the research project fell slightly behind the original schedule, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which began later in FY2019.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2020, the final year of the four-year research project, the research team continues developing the hazard information support systems. A series of experiments are planned to refine these systems. Analyses and interpretations of the quantitative data also continue in FY2020. Additionally, the qualitative data collected from accommodation employees in FY2019 will be analyzed. Building on the work done in previous years, the research team aims to present the project outcomes at conferences in related fields to seek expert feedback and publish academic articles to disseminate those outcomes.
