Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
All members of the project have made further progress with their investigations: de Ferranti on Japanese of prewar Australia, Inoue on South Indians in Tokyo, Saito on Nikkei Brazilians in Gumma, and Shishikura (now a 特別研究員 at Tokyo Tech so able to be a 分担者) on Ogasawara. Further fieldwork on Nepalese musicians has been carried out by Dr. Joshi, a 研究協力者. In Year 2 we secured participation of Dr. Yoneno-Reyes of Tokyo University as 研究協力者 ; her fieldwork on musicking among Filipino communities has addressed a large minority that has played an important role in Japanese popular music life. Progress of all members, both 分担者 and 協力者, has been reported on at project meetings in June, August and February. New videos and images continue to made available on the Website hosted by Tokyo Tech.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Each of Inoue, Saito and Shishikura, as well as the 2 協力者 Joshi and Yoneno, engaged in further fieldwork in Tokyo and Ogasawara. In the project leader de Ferranti’s case fieldwork trips for oral history work were undertaken in Yr 1, but in Yr 2 crucial documents were gathered at the State Library of WA in Perth. In April 2018 de Ferranti delivered a first paper on the project at an international symposium at Sydney University, and he gave further papers in July and December, in Wien and Perth, respectively. The fruits of our diverse fieldwork projects, namely photographs and video recordings of music performances, and interview recordings; were uploaded to a Cloudspace site to which all project members have access, and a selection of those materials were added to the project Website.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Core members will continue their individual topic investigations, building upon the data obtained during Years 1 and 2 and writing papers for publication. In a June 8 public symposium all of the 分担者 and 協力者 will present some of those data and materials in terms of, firstly, correspondences and discrepancies between membership of musical communities and other kinds of cultural cohorts within the cultural formation of the broader ethnic or minority group, and secondly, music’s significance for maintenance of identity and opening paths to increased intercultural understanding - that is, one of the two issues central to this project. An edited collection book proposal will be submitted to major academic publishers. International conference paper: de Ferranti (MSA Melbourne, December; proposed)
