Outline of Final Research Achievements

JASPER (Joint Attention, Symbolic Play, Engagement, and Regulation) is a treatment approach for toddlers with autism spectrum disorder based on a combination of developmental and behavioral principles developed by Dr. Kasari at UCLA. JASPER can be conducted in community-based settings such as preschools by preschool teachers. We have been working with Dr. Kasari to examine the effectiveness of JASPER in Japan. JASPER have been administrated by trained psychologists in Japan, and the effectiveness in promoting social communication has been verified. In addition, the validity of the SPACE in Japan, an assessment used in JASPER were examined. Furthermore, we conducted training for preschool teachers on early interventions based on the JASPER that can be used in preschools, and the application and effectiveness of the training in preschools were examined. The results suggest that hands-on training can lead to practical application in preschools.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
