Outline of Annual Research Achievements

(1) 蜂の巣型フォトニック結晶(PhC)に由来する新規な光閉じ込め現象を発見し、微小で高品質な垂直共振器面発光レーザー(VCSEL)の作製に成功した。具体的には、発光性半導体InGaAsPでできた蜂の巣型トポロジカルPhCの周辺を、同じ物質で、構造が僅かに違うトポロジカル特性を示さない自明なPhCで囲み、その境界で光が反射され、中心部に閉じ込められた光モードが増幅する現象を発見した。このデバイスを用いた室温下での光照射レーザー発振は、微小なデバイスにもかかわらず、優れた垂直指向性を示す。さらに発光閾値やサイドモード抑制比などのレーザー特性の指標がIEEEやVCSEL等の応用規格を満たすことを確認した。本研究成果は通信、センサー、加工、DNA操作等の革新的技術開発の要になっている優れたレーザー光源の開発の新しい指針を与えている。該当研究論文はNature Nanotechnology誌に掲載された。

(2) 中心軸が蜂の巣格子を組む誘電体長方体でできたPhCにおけるトポロジカルフォトニクス現象を解明した。具体的には、有効強束縛模型で得られたバンド構造のWilson loopの解析から、長方体の長辺が蜂の巣格子六角形単位胞の中心に指している場合、fragile topologyと呼ばれるトポロジカル状態が現れることを明らかにした。また、長方体をそれぞれの中心軸周りに90度回転した場合、トポロジカル的に自明なPhCが得られることも突き止めた。この特性を利用して、誘電体長方体の回転による書き換え可能なトポロジカル導波路の構築を提案した。該当研究論文はNanophotonics誌での掲載が決まった。
