| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research aims to enhance community health by reducing disease burden in regard to endemic and epidemic illnesses (malaria and communicable diseases)in Kongo Central province, DRC. The following activities were performed:
1. Pre-survey, with 625 households as participants, that included 3,662 household members; 2. Malaria testing (rapid diagnostic test for household representatives at a local hospital, and collection of epidemiological data (patients records); 3. Malaria education campaign at all study sites, during the 6-month period of follow-up in order to increase malaria awareness;
4. WASH intervention and, and 6. Post-survey and post-malaria testing to evaluate impact of interventions. A manuscript from this sub-project was submitted to a journal for publication.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Though it has started a little late compared to planned schedule, malaria research activities have been implemented within the fiscal year 2017 and, in March 2018, we were able to finalize this sub-project (malaria study) and start the first phase of the next study related to HIV/AIDS (communicable diseases study) which was planned for the fiscal year 2018. A written "Activity Report 2017" was submitted to Kochi Kenritsu Daigaku Kaken Research managment staff, and a manuscript related to malaria study was submitted to a journal.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
After starting HIV/AIDS study with KAP (Knowledge-Attitude-Practices) surveys(which is first phase of communicable diseases project), we will proceed as follows:
1. Luncheon of Anti-HIV/AIDS Education campaign in local communities and schools to increase HIV awareness;
2. Perform voluntary HIV testing at "Voluntary Couseling and Testing (VCT) centers and,
3. Collection of epidemiological records of previous (5-year period) HIV tests records at VCT centers to determine most prevalent risk behaviors in the province. This HIV/AIDS study will end in October 2018, if necessary financial support will be available on time.
4. In october, we plan to start hospital-based "Promotion of Occupational safety for healthcare workers study for the prevention of nosocomial viral infections"; this will promote the implementation of "Universal Precautions" in Congolese health settings.
