Quantification and prediction of information transmission efficiency in the human brain

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

脳磁図(MEG)および磁気共鳴画像法(MRI)を用いて、MEGを用いて計測された一次視覚野由来の視覚誘発脳磁場(C1)のピーク潜時の個人差をMRIを用いて計測された一次視覚野に情報を伝達する経路である視放線の微細構造から予測する研究を行なった。その結果、C1ピーク潜時の個人差の分散の2割以上を視放線の微細構造から予測できることが分かった。一方で、MRIによる視放線の微細構造計測から得られる脳活動発生時刻の予測精度には限りがあることも明らかになった。この研究結果について、原著論文としてeNeuro誌において発表した。

視放線を対象としたMRI計測から得られる予測精度が限られていた原因として、主たる視覚経路であるとされる外側膝状体から一次視覚野に至る軸索以外の経路が同一空間に混在していた可能性が考えられる。これについて検証するため、ドイツ・ユーリッヒ総合研究機構の協力を得て偏光顕微鏡を用いたベルベットモンキー死後脳の視覚系における白質線維束の高解像度分析を行なった。その結果、視放線と考えられる白質領域には視床枕由来の軸索も含まれていることが明らかになった。この研究結果は、原著論文としてeLife誌において発表した。

このほか、視放線を含む視覚白質線維束の種間比較を行うことでMRI計測による視放線計測と動物モデルにおける計測の比較検討を行なった研究(Kaneko et al., 2020 Brain Structure and Function)、視覚的注意に関わるとされる前頭ー頭頂ネットワークの白質線維束の微細構造を検討した研究 (Amemiya et al., 2021 Cortex)でも成果が得られたため、それぞれ原著論文として発表した。
