Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research has lead to the development of novel computing techniques to simulate superfluid dynamics on graphics processing units. In particular, it focused on the psuedo-spectral split-step Fourier technique, where the simulation software was used to simulate a variety of physical systems, including Tonks--Girardeau gases, chaotic vortex dynamics, and the generation and detection of unique vortex structures generated by coupling a Bose--Einstein Condensate (BEC) to the light from the evanescent field of a tapered optical fiber.
For the 2018 fiscal year, we focused on mainly the development of the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation solver with Graphics Processing Units (GPUE), which allowed us to perform al the novel physical simulations. To this end, we used the budget to hire a temporary software engineer to make dynamic simulations possible by mitigating the cost of file input and output. In addition, we continued searching for different three-dimensional vortex structures we could create with the simulations methods and with different physical systems.
At the end of this physical year, we now have a good understanding of how to generate three-dimensional vortex structures in BEC systems and have a stable toolset to simulate this behavior.

Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This work has performed all actions required by it in the initial grant proposal and is thus progressing smoothly

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
At this point, the simulation software has been developed and in FY 2019, we must polish up the results and submit to several journals in the field. At the same time, we need to finish development of GPUE so we can maintain it for future projects.
