2019 Fiscal Year Annual Research Report

Modelling "non-wedge-shaped" groundwater-seawater interactions under climate change and urbanization impacts and its implications for coastal development at the inner Tokyo Bay Area

Research Project

Project/Area Number 17J03852
Research InstitutionThe University of Tokyo

Principal Investigator

Liu Jiaqi  東京大学, 新領域創成科学研究科, 特別研究員(DC1) (00885577)

Project Period (FY) 2017-04-26 – 2020-03-31
KeywordsNumerical model / groundwater-seawater
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Laboratory research activities: The simulation results of variable-density flow and mass transport under horizontal groundwater flow in porous media were analyzed. The numerical approach was then applied to simulate the tsunami-induced seawater intrusion and aquifer recovery processes in the Niijima Island under future tsunami scenarios using both 2D and 3D models. These simulation results could provide understanding of the physical process and driving force for investigating the non-wedge-shaped groundwater-seawater interactions in the Tokyo Bay Area.
Fieldworks: The simulations results of the field-based models were presented and discussed with the local government officers during a fieldwork at the Niijima Island in July 2019. In the meeting with the local government officer, we also obtained additional information regarding the local management of groundwater resources, coastal erosion prevention, and preparedness of future tsunami disasters.
Publications: The research outcomes were presented in JpGU, AOGS, and AGU meetings. The results of the 2D field-based model were published in the journal Water Resources Research. The results of the 3D field-based model were accepted for publication in the Journal of Groundwater Hydrology. The results of the conceptual model were reviewed by Water Resources Research, and is under review after resubmission to the journal.
