Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project analyzed the introduction and development of quantum mechanics in Japan around the 1930s, focusing on the field of condensed matter physics, especially the field of atoms and molecules. We clarified the process from the recognition that quantum mechanics is essential for chemists as well as the acceptance of the concept of atoms and molecules to the publication of a Japanese quantum mechanics textbook for chemists by analyzing the activities of Masao Katayama's students in Japan and overseas. While physicists such as Masao Kotani joined the group of chemists, there were researchers who were working on atomic and molecular problems from physical viewpoint. We also clarify the process of the conclusion of the exchange agreement between RIKEN and the department of theoretical physics at Leipzig university in 1937.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
