Outline of Final Research Achievements

Early detection of vulnerable plaque that causes acute myocardial infarction is an important research theme. We compared intravascular imaging: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and near-infrared spectroscopy/intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) to develop a new diagnostic method for coronary vulnerable plaque. Although we were not able to develop a quantitative method for diagnosing arteriosclerosis by OCT, we could develop a new diagnostic algorithm for coronary atherosclerotic plaque by NIRS-IVUS. Our new algorithm using NIRS-IVUS can distinguish between plaque rupture, plaque erosion, and granular calcification on OCT.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

NIRS-IVUSの新たな冠動脈プラーク判断アルゴリズムにより、プラーク破裂、プラークびらん、粒状石灰化の正確な鑑別が可能となった。これにより不安定な冠動脈病変を特定できるようになり、急性冠症候群(急性心筋梗塞および不安定狭心症)のより適切な治療法を選択できるようになる。
