Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to concretely identify attributes that affect child restraint seat (CRS) use among Japanese parents/guardians, and to gather in-depth, reliable data on CRS rates of use for children under the age of 6. The results of this study will provide valuable information and baseline data for future research into CRS interventions. The goal for this year was to develop and pre-test a questionnaire assessing parents/guardians behaviours, knowledge and attitudes towards safety seat use. Similar questionnaires used in previous research conducted overseas were examined leading to a questionnaire containing items based on the Health Belief Model being developed. The questionnaire was pre-tested with mothers attending a local NPO childrearing support group. The pre-test exposed serious flaws in the design of the questionnaire. A new layout is now being considered.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Although the goal of developing and pre-testing a questionnaire was acheived this year, feedback from the pre-test has forced major changes to the questionnaire; hence the final version is still incomplete. However, a second pre-test is planned for early in the 2nd year of the project so that the questionnaire can be finalised. Distribution during fiscal year 2018 is unlikely to be delayed. Furthermore, a contact to distribute the questionnnaires to day care centers was established.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Next year, the questionnaire will be adminiistered to day care centers throughout the city. Coding and processing of data will begin shortly after collection of the completed questionnaires. Preparation for the roadside survey will begin. Toward the end of 2018, we plan to recruit and train observers.
|
Causes of Carryover |
In 2017 a laptop and stationary to be used for the questionnaires were not purchased because they were not yet needed. However, in 2018 the questionniare will be distributed requiring a large amount of stationary and a laptop will be needed to anaylsis the data from the returned questionnaires.
