Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2018, we focused on data collection, and conducted interviews in both Singapore and Japan: 23 interviews in Singapore and 34 interviews in Japan in total. Upon our discussion, we decided that the data collection reached to the saturated point. All interviews have been transcribed. We held a project meeting in Singapore and discussed the progress of data collection efforts and addressed concerns or issues that existed at that point. In August 2018, we gave a presentation that explored the concept of intimacy between women in Japan that would comprise significant part of the theoretical framework of this project at American Sociological Association and received positive feedback. Also we published a paper that reflected the issues and concerns that we faced in the process of data collection and analyzed the possible reasons for that. We began initial analysis of the data and formed possible themes that emerged from the data. We are in the process of writing the first paper in which we explore the effects of governmentality in the way non-heterosexual women negotiate their everyday life in Japan and Singapore as well as their relations with one another. Second paper discussing different aspects of the effects of social conditions in each country on the subjectivity of non-heterosexual women is in the initial stages of analysis.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
For 2018, we aimed at completing data collection and its transcription and initiating analysis of the data. We are at the point where we planned to be at the end of the second year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2019, we will prepare the data for analysis by coding transcripts, then we will conduct qualitative analysis on the prepared data. Follow up interviews may be undertaken during this time to provide additional clarity to the work, if necessary. Once analysis is complete, we will write the final report and present research findings. We will have a project meeting either in Japan or Singapore and will again invite Jorge Arditi to provide an additional round of feedback on this project, including feedback of our data analysis. Strategies to expand the research will also be discussed.

Causes of Carryover |
The payment of transcripts was conducted only in April, 2019, which was about 1.1 million yen. Thus the defacto amount left is about 90000 yen. There are other transcripts to pay, which will be about 120000 yen. This year we will use the money for transcripts, meetings, and conferences.
