Research Project

Project/Area Number 17K02102

Project Period (FY) 2017-04-01 – 2020-03-31
Keywordswellness tourism / Common Pool Resources / Sustainable Development / DMO
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The work planned for the first year of this project was concluded according to the plan, leading to the publication of a research article titled "Integrative diversification of wellness tourism services in rural areas - An operational framework model applied to East Hokkaido (Japan)".

The work planned for the second year of this project has been undertaken by Joao Romao, Kazuo Machino, Mayumi Okada and Peter Nijkamp. A preliminary version of a research article (titled "Tourism participatory governance for sustainable development: A common pool resources approach") was presented at the 58th Congress of the European Regional Science Association (Cork, Ireland, 2018) and at the 55th Meeting of the Japanese Section of Regional Science Association International (Sapporo, 2018).

Based on a integrative literature review, three interconnected streams in tourism literature (analysis of common pool resources, studies on sustainable tourism development and contributions for the definition of the roles, missions and strategies of a destination management organization) were combined. This approach integrates the management of CPR and the principles of sustainable development within the strategic role of a DMO, aiming at the achievement of relevant benefits for the host communities within the 3 pillars of sustainable development through participatory processes of destination management. An exploratory application of this conceptual framework to the case of wellness tourism development in Kushiro-Akan is proposed.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The work planned for 2017 was concluded and published at the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research, under the title “Integrative diversification of wellness tourism services in rural areas - An operational framework model applied to East Hokkaido (Japan)”.
The work planned for 2018 was concluded and included in the article “Tourism participatory governance for sustainable development: A common pool resources approach”. A final version will be presented at the APacCHRIE & EuroCHRIE Joint Conference (Hong Kong, 2019). The article will be submitted in June 2019.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The work developed in the previous two years will have two potential international developments:
- a participatory destination audit and branding strategy involving local stakeholders for wellness tourism development in Kerala (India), based on the conceptual framework developed in the article “Integrative diversification of wellness tourism services in rural areas - An operational framework model applied to East Hokkaido (Japan)”; this work in currently being undertaken in cooperation with Indian researchers;
- a participatory strategic approach to destination management involving local stakeholders in Gotland (Sweden), based on the conceptual framework developed in the article “Tourism participatory governance for sustainable development: A common pool resources approach”; this work will start in 2019, in collaboration with Swedish researchers.
- the work planned for the third year of this project will be undertaken as defined in the project, including: Systematization of resources and key stakeholders for tourism development; Literature review on Game Theory and its applications to tourism; Definition of a preliminary theoretical game model; Adaptation to the case of Tourism; Empirical test of the model; Formulation of a new Game Theory based approach for the Common Pool Resources (CPR) in Tourism.

Causes of Carryover

The work is being developed according to the original project and the activities planned for the 3rd year will be implemented accordingly.

These activities are mostly related to the production of a research article focused on a theoretical approach to the utilisation of Common Pool resources in tourism, by using a Game Theory approach. This article will be presented in international conferences before publication, as it was planned.
