Work on the book manuscript has continued. The structure and content of the chapters has been changed as the manuscript has been developed. Currently the introduction and chapters 1 and 2 have been revised and expanded. Work on chapter 3 has begun. At this point, one third of the manuscript has been completed.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research project remains on schedule for completion at the end of the 3 year grant period. The manuscript is roughly one third complete. The needed revisions and research for the completion of the first phase of the project were successfully completed.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During this second year of the project additional research and writing will be conducted to finish the middle third of the manuscript. This will include the examination of relevant archival material and the writing and revision of the middle chapters of the manuscript.

| Causes of Carryover |
Difficulties in locating and hiring a qualified research assistant delayed the use of these funds for wages. This is why there is an excess of funds at this point.
This funds will be used to pay my current research assistant for her ongoing work. Some of these funds may also be used to obtain archival material from libraries in the US.
