Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined the activities of Austrian orchestra conductor Clemens Krauss during the Nazi German era, particularly in Berlin, Stuttgart, and Vienna. Using archival documents in Germany and Austria, I presented many examples of the radio program production processes of the time. I also referred to the newspapers during this period and determined when the programs were broadcast and how they were accepted by the public . Based on the findings, Krauss was actively involved in the production of various radio programs, and the Nazis used his performances to appeal to listeners.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は、現地のアーカイブ等で保存されている未刊行の一次資料を多数用いながら、これまで十分に研究が行われていなかったナチス・ドイツ時代のラジオ放送におけるクラシック音楽番組の実態と当時の音楽文化の実情の一端を、クレメンス・クラウスを中心に実証的に検証したことである。
本研究の成果は、音楽をプロパガンダのツールと位置付け、マスメディアを通じて積極的に活用していたナチスの戦略の一端を垣間見せるものでもある。この点に着目すれば、本研究で扱った内容は、現代におけるマスメディアをめぐる諸問題を考える際、歴史から得られる事例として、アクチュアルな社会的意義を持ち得るように思われる。
