Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Classics education in Japanese schools (here, we refer to upper secondary schools where many Japanese are exposed to the classics) is currently at a crossroads. From 2022, classics will be taught in the compulsory first-year Japanese language subject “Language and Culture” and the second- and third-year elective subjects “Classics Exploration. The study of classics in these subjects will be based on the academic standards of the new Courses of Study, which aim to acquire and develop “the ability to think, judge, and express” and to foster “the ability to learn and humanity,” rather than the “knowledge and skills” that have been emphasized up to now. Against this background, we have been exploring what kind of learning literature born in the Ryukyu Islands in the early modern period could offer to high school students, and have materialized it mainly through the development of teaching materials.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
