Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Important progress was made on editing my PhD dissertation so far. Chapters concerning American gothic were expanded and further details were added with resources purchased and accessed in archives and libraries. A call for book proposals for the series on gothic literature was issued by University of Wales Press. I am currently working on submitting a proposal there. Over the course of 2017, I submitted an academic article to the JAAS journal, a book review to the Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies, and a book chapter to a book on Gothic and Romantic modern authors for review for publication.I also worked on editing other essays, one of which I submitted for review to the Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies in March 2018. During August 2017, I conducted archival and library research at the Library of Congress in the US on American Gothic and discovered items significant to the project, including the scrapbook of houses that Shirley Jackson used as models for her stories. As planned, I traveled to Bordeaux, France to give a lecture at the Society for the Study of Women Writers. I also gave three other lectures: one at an international conference on Japanese Gothic (1/2018) at Nagoya University, one at Liberlit at Seikei University (2/2018), and one at the international conference of the Supernatural Studies Association at Bronx Community College in New York City (3/2018). I made valuable connections at these conferences, securing interest in this research from scholars both within and outside of Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is moving along smoothly so far. Writing the book proposal is taking more time than planned and requires more forethought, but it is still within schedule. Although I was able to make some journal submissions, I think I can and should do more to use material from the many lectures related to the project to better disseminate the research. I have already started to contact keynote speakers and create the conference website and artwork database, which is actually part of 2018’s schedule. I have started to arrange the conference venue and committee.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2018, I will travel to Manchester, UK for the International Gothic Association’s annual conference to give a paper. Afterwards, I will do fieldwork in England and Scotland on Ann Radcliffe, Horace Walpole, the Bronte sisters, and other British authors. I will attend conferences in Japan to network with Gothic scholars, in the hope of putting together a Gothic panel at a domestic conference in late 2018 or in 2019. I will give two more conference lectures in Japan and abroad during 2018. I will submit my book proposal, and more forward with the planning for my conference, “Gothic Spaces.” I will submit the three academic articles I am currently editing, and complete a book review I was invited to write for the Wenshan Review (NCCU, Taipei).

Causes of Carryover |
The amount was set aside for the purchase of books, which would not arrive in sufficient time to do registration ("nohin kenshu") at the university. I will buy these books during the next fiscal year. In addition, it should be noted that the monetary adjustments related to the temporary advance for the research trip to New York City and Philadelphia during March 2018 (AY2017) were completed in the next fiscal year (AY2018).
