Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During 2020, giving conference lectures and traveling for research were virtually impossible, so I concentrated my efforts on two aspects of the project: publications and creating the framework for the Gothic in Asia Network. Regarding publications, the two main focuses were editing lectures previously given at conferences into publishable form and working on my book prospectus. The publications submitted during 2020 were to two academic journals and one to a special issue on Shirley Jackson. The publication for the special issue was unfortunately rejected because the reviewer did not agree with my analysis of the author's works. As for the other two publications, one is still currently under review (I expect the results soon), and the other was rejected pending revisions. As for the Gothic in Asia Network, I have connected with 4 other scholars who will become the first steering board, and we formulated our goals for creating this new academic society. The first goal will be to hold an inaugural event (online) in 2021 autumn. We plan to build the society from there. I also released a video lecture on Emily Dickinson and the Gothic for the Emily Dickinson International Society lecture series, which is posted on their Youtube Channel: https://youtu.be/T5jgEUxb7cE Unfortunately, the COVID19 situation prevented all of my archival research goals during 2020. It was impossible to travel, so I had to delay the remainder of this research into 2021.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The situation of the COVID19 Pandemic has delayed communications with various international scholars, delayed the release of published materials, and also delayed my use of archival materials that I need to travel to the US to access.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the next few months, I will submit my prospectus for my book on haunted houses to University of Wales Press and proceed with trying to obtain a contract to publish the book. I will also submit the other 3 publications I was working on to academic journals, including the journals Revenant, Aetaernam, and Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies. And I will submit a book chapter for a new book of collected essays on Shirley Jackson; the topic of my chapter is Shirley Jackson, myth, and ritual and considers Jackson's use of myth in her Gothic fiction.

Causes of Carryover |
The remaining money will be used to buy books needed for completing my book prospectus and publications during the next fiscal year. The reason for this is that we still cannot travel to other countries to visit archives, so I need to buy some resources myself in order to complete my work on this project during 2021.
