Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to travel restrictions because of the COVID19 pandemic, this year I was also unable to conduct archival research in the US. However, instead, I concentrated my activities on coordinating co-research with other scholars online, and gave a lecture at an online conference. I gave 1 conference lecture related to this project: “Ritual and Contagion in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House” at the international conference Shirley Jackson in the 21st Century in online hybrid (video lecture) format at the School of English, Trinity College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland). This lecture is public and available on YouTube. My major achievement this year was coordinating with 4 other researchers--Katarzyna Ancuta (Chulalungkorn U), Li-Hsi Hsu (NCCU), Chiho Nakagawa (Nara Women's U), and Sarah Olive (Bangor U)--in order to set up the Gothic in Asia Association (GAA). These scholars all participated in my conference "Gothic Spaces" in 2019, so this effort was born from my Kakenhi funding. We have successfully created the organization's framework, finished our website (we intend to launch the website in May 2022), and have done the groundwork for 2 upcoming events. To create an Asia-centered network for Gothic Studies was one of the overarching goals of this Kakenhi project, so it's very significant that we founded this society and will move forward with its activities and promotion now. I also discussed the draft of my book prospectus with a publisher's representative, with the intent to submit the prospectus in mid-2022.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
During 2021, the remaining research progressed with delays, entirely due to the on-going pandemic. I was unable to travel to visit archives, as research institutions in the US restricted entry and the University of Tokyo requested that we refrain from travel. However, I was able to order books, and visit the university library, which made it easier to research than it was in 2020. I also had better access to online materials than before, since I had become more used to working without physical access to archives. Despite these issues, I was still able to complete the framework for setting up the Gothic in Asia Association, which had been previously delayed, and also to liaise with a publisher about my book prospectus, which is also one of the goals of this project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the final year of this research, I intend to complete several things that were delayed by the pandemic during 2020 and 2021. First, I will cooperate with the other Gothic in Asia Association founders on the official launch of the Gothic in Asia Association website in May 2022, and work with them to build the network, creating a membership option, steering board, and fiscal system. Second, I will work together with the Gothic in Asia Association founding members to hold our inaugural symposium, and also create connections with other research groups in Asia for the purpose of holding future events. Finally, I will submit my book prospectus to a publisher. I am not sure if I can complete the missing archival research in-person this year, but I will find a work-around, such as paying for photocopies.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The remaining funds will be used to purchase books and other materials necessary for completing research for my book prospectus.
|
Remarks |
The tentative version of our Gothic in Asia Association is above; we will edit the website further and buy a domain name and official launch it in late May 2022.
