Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During fiscal years 2020 and 2021, my research was significantly hampered by the pandemic due to travel and shipping restrictions. However, 2022 saw a return to library and archive access, to travel to conduct fieldwork, and to shipping as usual. I was able to visit the libraries and archives that were previously inaccessible to me and was thus able to complete the research that had been delayed due to Covid-19. I gave one lecture on Shirley Jackson's haunted houses at an international academic conference, Captivating Criminality 9, co-sponsored by myself and the Gothic in Asia Association. I also worked on revising my lectures from previous years into articles for academic journals, two of which are now currently under review. In 2019, I spearheaded a 2-day international conference, entitled "Gothic Spaces," at the University of Tokyo, Komaba. This conference brought together more than 70 scholars from five continents. As a result of this conference, during 2022, I was able to spearhead the official co-founding of the first international Gothic association based in Asia, the Gothic in Asia Association. In 2022, we started preparations to publish an edited volume to inaugurate the society. Most importantly, in 2022, I completed my monograph prospectus for submission to a publisher. The topic of the book is haunted houses in literature, from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century. This time period proved to be the most rich in literature, as it coincides with a significant amount of social upheaval.
