Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research focuses on 19th century American literature before the establishment of the science fiction genre, aiming to examine elements that bring about the relativization of time and space, such as time travel and parallel worlds. Its objectives are to extract these aspects and establish the positioning of canonical authors within the SF genre, as well as to construct a prehistory of science fiction. Specifically, it seeks to explore the relationship between Henry James, who is regarded as a writer of the "ivory tower," and the scientific thought of that time, while also investigating the extent and critical threshold of the far-reaching impact of 19th century technology.
