Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Contextual as well as strategic considerations made it important to switch the order of the research plan for fiscal year 2018 and 2019: New and highly fruitful international co-operative events in 2018 with well-known specialists from western universities in Europe and the United States made it possible to already focus on the analysis of “precariousness” and “hospitality”(originally planned for 2019), while the originally planned closer co-operation with Professor Bresson from Paris 8 could be rescheduled for later. The research results with the new foreign co-operations which evolved out of my research activities in 2017 were disseminated in 2 international symposiums which I organized: one retracing the status quo of and laying the groundwork for reconceptualizations of “precariousness” in the humanities and social sciences, while the other focused on imagery, symbolism and terminology of precariousness. Further research results were published in 3 papers and 9 presentations at international conferences and symposiums.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
All research activities and co-operations in 2018 furthered insights into the greater context and close-knit connectivity of Jelinek’s specific artistic, rhetorical, discursive and political interests with topical international discussions of the (European) refugee crisis as a phenomenon of 21st century global developments. Comparison with other authors, such as Albahari, Lazkani and Schrott testified to Jelinek’s unique, sophisticated and disturbing contributions. The usefulness of Jelinek’s artistic and rhetorical (narrative) techniques for further understanding of international reactions to and political activities concerned with the European refugee crisis could be convincingly established in exchange with many international researchers from various fields (e.g. literary studies, linguistics, philosophy, anthropology, sociology).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Because of the fruitful changes in the research plan for 2018, it will be necessary in 2019 to return to the planned research for 2018 skipped in that year: The research focus will be (as planned in the application for 2018) on intertextuality between Jelinek, ancient Greek and Latin literature (especially Aeschylos, Euripides, and Ovidus) and modern intersubjective and ethical thought by Heidegger, Derrida, Kristeva, Blanchot, and Freud, as well as influential contemporary philosophers such as Dupuy, Latouche, Nancy. Leading concepts and keywords will be: “refugee”, “stranger”, “resiliency”, “disaster”, and “fate”. 2 presentations at international conferences have already been organized according to plan: one will focus on Elfriede Jelinek’s use of metaphor, narrative, terminology, and linguistic and rhetorical strategies, while the other will situate Jelinek’s contribution in a broader international and comparative setting in the hope to clarify new tendencies in international literature and theory concerned with this field. Depending on progress, there will be a research trip to France for research in Paris, as planned for 2018, and further up-to-date research and co-operation contacts with important researchers on Jelinek in Vienna, Austria, which I am organizing at the moment.

Causes of Carryover |
2 important research presentations at international conferences in summer 2019 have already been organized according to plan and both my presentation applications have been accepted. The research trip to France for research in Paris, which had to be postponed because of changes in the research order due to favorable developments in international co-operation, and a meeting with renowned specialists on Elfriede Jelinek including a research trip to Jelinek's home in Vienna, which I am organizing now, need to be financed. Also, the latest publications relevant to this research need to be purchased. After having meticulously inspected necessary research material until today, 2019 is especially important as the best timing to collect all the necessary and newest material for the final research reports to be started thereafter.
