Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year has been dedicated to establishing a theoretical framework for the final analysis through library research and related publications. Each researcher has carried out reference research in their related discipline. This year's research culminated in the hosting of a symposium in which the three investigators of the project presented their findings. The symposium titled "La poesía, la identidad y el ojo de José Watanabe" was held on December 9, 2017 at Waseda University Institute of Latin American Studies. The attendees of the symposium included translators of the author, scholars and family members. This symposium was very significant for the project because each researcher received valuable feedback about the strengths and weaknesses of the current progress. In addition, an peer-reviewed, academic article was publish in a scholarly journal which deals with academic research related to relationships between Asia and Western countries. The article is an analysis of the rhetoric and semantic tools used in a specific poetic work of Jose Watanabe. This article is significant because it is directed towards academics that specialize in literary, cultural and linguistic aspects of East/West relationships.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The initial plan accounted for a symposium to be held during the second year of the project. The theoretical research for the first year has gone more smoothly than anticipated. This permitted us to hold the symposium a year in advance. However, trips that had been planned to collect data and reference materials for the first year of the project were not able to be realized. In addition, it was determined that a lap top computer was needed in order to process and store the accumulated for the project. This was not accounted for in the original project plan.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The second year of the project will be dedicated to continued library research and the organizing of a trip to Lima, Peru in which interviews with scholars who have offered input on our project will be carried out. In addition, interviews with family members of Jose Watanabe with be carried out in order to supplement autobiographical data on the author and his work. Also, a book proposal is to be drafted and submitted to the American publishing company, Palgrave, for the publication of the findings of the research project. This will require the coordination of meeting to determine the structure of the book.

Causes of Carryover |
During the following fiscal year field work in Lima, Peru and Santiago, Chile will be carried out. Close relative of the Jose Watanabe have agreed to be interviewed in order to collect biographical data on the poeta. In addition, these interviews, along with a visit to the hometown of the nikkei poet, will provide essential background information needed to contextualized the analysis to be made for the publication of book. In addition, academics in Peru who have published on Watanabe and his work have agreed to interviews, which will provide feedback into the theoretical analysis.
