Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This project is aimed at investigating (1) natural change in Ainu through available old records of the less described dialects and (2) change induced by contact with Japanese in Hokkaido and Nivkh in Sakhalin through linguistic fieldwork on Nivkh as well as other contact phenomena in the Transeurasian languages. Our goal is to advance knowledge of the history of Ainu.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

My Co-Investigator T.Sato and I have been reviewing an old document Kuril’skie Slova (1844) though weakly Skype sessions. We have published a deciphered Ainu text recorded by N.A. Nevskij in 1922 from SpB archive. Bugaeva and Gorlova have published an English translation of an essay about the Kuril Ainu by O. Argunov (1742). Bugaeva and Sato have published/presented on the history of the possessive forms in Ainu and Bugaeva on the history of the antipassive and reported discourse. Sato continued deciphering and generalizing about the use of kana in the Edo period Ainu documents written by the Japanese. Gruzdeva has published on Nivkh toponyms in the Amur-Sakhalin region and on the problem of finiteness and typology of the Eurasian languages and focused on Nivkh revitalization.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY 2021, my Co-Investigator T. Sato and I will continue working on the Kuril dialect of Ainu and Saru Ainu texts by N.A. Nevskij. We plan to publish a numder of articles on various grammatical phenomena in Ainu is a diachronic perspective. Gruzdeva , M. Temina, J. Janhunen and I plan to continue working on the reconstruction of language contacts in the Amur-Sakhalin area and organizing our Nivkh fieldwork materials.

Causes of Carryover
