2017 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Speech Sound Production in the Bilingual Brain

Research Project

Project/Area Number 17K02748
Research InstitutionHiroshima University

Principal Investigator

Verdonschot RG  広島大学, 医歯薬保健学研究科(歯), 助教 (30756094)

Project Period (FY) 2017-04-01 – 2020-03-31
Keywordspsycholinguistics / language production / EEG / phonology
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

First, I have published two papers with my collaborator (Sachiko Kinoshita) from Macquarie University. One (in Memory and Cognition), outlying the importance of the phonological stroop task in the investigation of the phonological unit of (bilingual) language production and another (in JEP:LMC) on allograph Priming. Second, I investigated Korean phonological encoding (instead of in the 2nd year) and carried out experiments in collaboration with Prof. Han from Konkuk University (Seoul). These findings are now accepted for publication in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology. Third, I collaborated with Dr. Kiyama (Tohoku U.) and published an EEG investigation on linguistic markers of social distance which is now accepted for publication in the Journal of Neurolinguistics.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

One paper pertaining to this project is published and three other papers I worked on in the last academic year are now accepted for publication. Collaborations inside and outside of Japan are going smoothly and it is anticipated that this will continue to improve in the next academic year. The necessary equipment and (international) collaborations for carrying out the rest of the project are arranged and I expect no problems continuing this project successfully.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I am now carrying out as well as planning new EEG experiments together with Prof. Miyaoka (Hiroshima U. of Economics) on the phonological unit of language encoding. Also, I am devising a test for Japanese which quickly measures L2 proficiency (with Prof. Sakai from Waseda U). This test will prove to be very beneficial when investigating L2 Japanese bilingual speakers. Additionally, per the research plan, I will continue my collaboration in the current academic year with Prof. Schiller from Leiden University (NL), Prof. Han from Konkuk University (KOR) as well as Prof. Tamaoka from Nagoya U. I am planning to carry out experiments using Vietnamese (instead of Cantonese as originally described in the proposal) as Vietnamese is syllabic but has an alphabetic orthography.
