Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first year involved preparation for the main study, as outlined below. Bought necessary equipment and tested it in the classroom (video cameras, tripods, exterior microphones etc) Purchased and piloted English speaking proficiency tests (Versant) that will use to measure growth in proficiency during the main study. Developed and tested surveys that will be used in the main study which measure motivation, self-efficacy and task satisfaction. Developed and piloted speaking tasks for the main study. We presented about the development of the speaking tasks at an international SLA conference and received valuable input from audience members which was used to subsequently refine the speaking tasks that will be used in the main study.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research was carefully planned from the outset and this has greatly aided the smooth progress we were able to achieve in the first year. No unforeseen obstacles arose. We were also aided by the fact that both researchers work in the same department of the same university and therefore regular weekly meetings ensured that were able to meet our research goals consistently. Also clearly defined roles for each researcher meant that work was shared appropriately and in a timely manner.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We intend to follow the research plan originally submitted. Therefore the second year will involve the main data collection. This will involve repeated measures of proficiency, motivation, and self-efficacy. It will also involve video observations throughout the year of students engaged in speaking tasks. We also intend to present our preliminary findings related to this data at an international conference during the next year. The final year of the project will involve data analysis and writing results which will be published in international peer-reviewed journals. We would also like to present the final results at the "Task-based Language Teaching 2019" conference to be held in Ottawa, Canada in August, 2019.

Causes of Carryover |
For this next fiscal year we will incur the following expenses. Buying speaking tests to measure proficiency growth. Paying for a survey website to administer questionnaires. Travel expenses for international conference.
