Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I visited the following university hospitals- Prince of Songkla, Thailand, Thammasat, Thailand, Cheng Kung, Taiwan, Brawijaya, Indonesia. At these university hospitals I interviewed doctors regarding the form, content and utility of case presentations in English. I interviewed English teachers regarding the teaching of clinical case presentations. I performed workshops on clinical case presentations. I promoted a new regional organization (see below). I observed actual clinical case presentations. I also established the East Asian Association of Medical English Teachers (EAMET). This included promoting the organization, recruiting members, creating and managing a website, writing original content for the website, writing and sending regular email circulars regarding related issues.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As written in the original proposal, I have visited 4 Asian university hospital to gain information about the management of English clinical case presentations and its role within English medical education. Most of this data was compiled in notes or recorded.

I have established the East Asian Association of Medical English teachers, as initially proposed, and am actively recruiting members as well as managing the organization's website. I regularly add content to the website, particularly regarding the teaching of medical English within Asia, and distribute email circulars updating the status of the website.

I have also extended connections between the universities mentioned earlier with the University of Miyazaki, particularly the new establishment of ties with Thammasat Univ.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I will visit Hanoi Medical University Vietnam to expannd the research previously mentioned and will begin a 6 month sabbatical at Thammasat Univ. Thailand focusing upon promoting EAMET and training teachers to teach EMP and clinical case presentations. The EAMET website will be continually updated and expanded.
I will publish an academic paper regarding the form and content of clinical case presentations with a peer-reviewed academic journal within the current year and will perform at least two presentations at conferences in Japan wherein I will present the data and interpret it in order to enable medical English teachers. I will also present at a regional (Asian) conference within the fiscal year in order to present similar data as well as continual promotion of the EAMET organization.

Causes of Carryover

The remaining amount was so small that no extra consideration was given to it.
