Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The treatment app was successfully piloted during the spring semester of 2018. More than 200 English learners participated as part of either a treatment or a control group. All participants were asked to engage with the learning app over the course of four weeks. The pilot study informed our larger data collection phase that was conducted in the fall semester of 2018. This investigation focused on the metric time on task and its correlation with increased proficiency with the platform. The results helped us evaluate the effectiveness of the educational English learning app.
Finally, detailed descriptions of the project including initial results and conclusions were disseminated at one international conference and two domestic conferences on English education and technology in 2018.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research project is progressing smoothly and is right on schedule. The second year was focused on conducting the pilot study, making necessary modifications, conducting the main study, collecting and statistically analyzing the data. Both in the spring and the fall the data collection was successful and the analyzing of the data yielded exceptional as well as expected results. Furthermore, presentations of the results and the entire project are currently being prepared and will be ready to be disseminated this year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As all of our data collection and analyses have been completed, the final year of our project will be focused on results dissemination. We will be attending three international conferences in order to present the results in May, June, and November. Additionally, we will be presenting at a minimum of one domestic conference to be decided early this academic year. Furthermore, an overview of our project and the results achieved will be drafted and the subsequent manuscript will be submitted for publication in an international peer-reviewed academic journal.

Causes of Carryover

The remaining funds that were not used in 2018 due to ticket prices being slightly cheaper than expected will be transferred to help cover the costs of one of the international conferences where we will be presenting our results.
