Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
- We have held monthly virtual work meetings and regular in-person work meetings. - We have completed initial version of instrument to measure learner resistance (Linguaculture Learning Profiler)- We collected data and refined items through factor analysis and six rounds of testing - We have finalized a 32 item instrument with high level of validity. We have gathered data from 12 teachers with a sample size of approximately 600 - We have publicized the research project through presentations and publications, We have planned next step of data collection- We have organized a workshop to include more researchers and gather more data.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Our instrument creation proceeded smoothly, and managed to create high-validity items for three categories of item: resistance, engagement, and mixed states. We are now ready to gather much wider data set using this validated instrument. Research project has created high interest, through several conference presentations. We expect no problem in getting help to gather more data.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We have finalized plans to offer a workshop to train teachers in how to use this instrument to better understand their student motivation. - We will gather a larger data set between now and November. We will do an analysis of this larger data set in order to draw more general conclusions related to language learner resistance. We are particularly interested in comparing levels of resistance based on university major, gender, age, and region. We expect that results will show a high degree of mixed states - learners who superficially want to learn, but who have psychological resistance to doing so. We will continue to present results at conferences this year. - We will publish our findings in one or more academic articles, a website, and through sharing the instrument we have created.

Causes of Carryover |
Expenses for this year will be spent on travel for research members to go attend research meetings and conferences. We will also spend money to have someone help us do data entry and data analysis. We will use money for organizing workshop and inviting guest speaker.
